just caught the new series with these refreshing spirits ... Know what they're talking abt - that shit-eatin' grin when in the presence of eternal, awe-inspiring natural beauty of this wild world (what is left of it). Each day we defrock, deface, betray it, yet when we find a moment of solitude somehow we return to that inner beauty & serenity that unites us all. Be still. It will come.
Thank you Sean & Jon for bringing us your insight w/out fear. Thanks for swimming upstream (literally at times) - you will never please all but the ones that have ears will hear.
    Truly enjoyed the piece...

awizman is 100% on the mark. Into The Wild is Jon Krakauer's message to all not only of Chris McCandless' free spirit, but also of Jon's own free spirit. Sean Penn has my eternal gratitude for this emotion stirring movie. Yes, the desire for free spirit is there, in 15-30% of us (I think), and for those who cannot always exercise it Jon and Sean have helped us tremendously with this book and film. Thank you both.

I just saw the movie last night. It humbled me. What Chris (Alex), Sean and Jon have done is nothing short of remarkable. I thought I was living an honest life, being true to what I love and believe in. I am now painfully aware of all the pseudo lives I have created for those around me and to "protect" myself. I am letting that go. I am going to step into life instead of around it. Waaaahoooo!!!!

By far Iconoclasts is one of the best shows on TV. Sean and John has to be one of my favorites as well as the Eddie and Laird (truely superman) one. It is refreshing to see all these amazing people as people and not the celebrity. I want to thank these people for showing sides of them that really let you connect with them as a human of this earth. Sean has got to be one of the most influential people in entertainment today and is amazing behind the camera as well as in front. I find it admireable that he as one of many high profile celebrities give back so much, because they have the means to. And I think Sean finds it his responsibility to help anyway he can because he can. I remember after Katrina when he was down there in the boats going from neighborhood to neighborhood seeing first hand for himself the devistation, as he did in Iraq to come up with his own understanding of the goings on without the government influences. I dream of a day where I can hopefully make some sort of impact whether it be big or small. FEW things have touched my soul this year and Into the Wild is one, a CNN story about an Iraqi boy name Yousiff who was burned by masked men infront of his home while he was playing, and most of all the death of my mother. My mother was a life long smoker and died this year because of the lasting side affects, she was only 54. I mention this because it broke my heart to see such an intelligent person like Sean lighting up. I don't judge his for this in any way as I know it is an incredibly hard habit to break. I smoked personally for a fews years about 2 a day. I stopped the second I found out I was pregnant and havent since. I have been angry towards people who are careless when it comes to smoking, like smoking with their children or throwing their butts out the window (HATE THAT MORE THAN ANYTHING! as I live in CA and have 1st hand seen fire devistation) still can't believe people do that. I hope someday someone will begin to question the government that allows such items that have been proven over and again to be harmfull to people and eventually fatal to be sold. Hopefully someone with as much passion and conviction as Sean. Thank you Robert Redford for ALL of your contributions, you have truely created something to be proud of. Can't wait for Season IV something with Eric Clapton would be fantastic....maybe I can be the other half ; ) but that wont work...i am not an icon YET

I totally agree. I've read all of Jon's books and I love his writing style and his humility. Sean Penn, to me, is one of the most brave actors in Hollywood these days, and I always look forward to his new projects. This episode was mesmerizing, the scenery and stories they shared breathtaking. Definitely one of my favorite pairings. (Though I gotta admit: Every time I see a new episode, I think it's my new favorite! This is a great series!)
