| First let me say that this episode had me so riveted to the screen, that I was watching it at 3am, unwilling to give it up. Unfortunately I fell asleep before the verdict, so I'm writing this without knowing how it all ended! I truly hope the jury saw what I saw in the case, and that the defendants were aquitted. I found Jesus a compelling and ernest defendant. He seemed to be a good man in a bad position, dealing with known gang members spoiling for a fight, capable of killing anyone in their way. The fact that they made a u-turn at the traffic light tells me they were looking to hurt someone that morning, and Jesus and his friend just happened to be handy. There is one difference in my mind though, between this case and the average "gun fight in the parking lot" scenerio - Jesus' military training. I've heard that when an average person like me tries to use a gun for protection, they almost always get shot, either with their own gun or with their opponent's. Bringing a gun into a situation implies intent to use it, and unless one has had serious firearms training, it gives the opponent a weapon to use on its owner. Chances are, the aggressor has had more face-to-face experience with shooting someone than the person being attacked. But Jesus had training. And if he's been in Iraq, he's been forced into a vigilance that we'll never know. The young people there must use their guns at a moment's notice, or they will die. He went for his gun with the knowledge that humans are capable of commiting great harm to one another, and his instinct was to protect his friends. I pray that he is safe in his home tonight, in the company of his family; not alone, in a jail cell somewhere. If he hadn't had his gun, I believe he and his friends would've died in that parking lot. Do I believe in carrying a gun for self-defense? No. But Jesus was lucky to have had his with him - and so were his friends.
