Welcome to THE GREEN Consultation Area
This topic helps people learn about, plan and execute green changes for themselves, for their families and even for their communities. If you have a specific question about how to "go green" and would like some expert advice, please post a reply in this thread. We'd suggest changing your subject line to better reflect the contents of your question.
As a general guideline, please try to limit each post to one question or one solution; if you have multiple projects or questions in mind by all means make a post for each one. With that in mind, there should be two main types of posts here:
1) People who have a question about green philosophy, green lifestyle choices and hopefully practical steps that can be taken to make one's mind, body and environment more green. Before posting a new thread, please take a look at the existing threads within this topic. If someone else has already asked your question; you can add to that existing thread or find that the answer you seek is there.
2) People who would like to respond to a question with an answer or who have expertise in one area of green and would like to invite people to ask questions about that area of expertise.
As with anything, we have to start somewhere, so please join us in making this a rich resource so that the world can become green faster.

| Air Purification Consulting Available |

Hello everyone,
I am a specialist in air purification devices. I look at air purification as an important part of preventative medicine. If you can keep your air environment healthy and clean of pollutants, it helps your lungs deliver oxygen to your body and brain, which in turn allows your heart to be less strained and improves overall circulation.
Asthma is a major problem for many people and proper air purification helps out tremendously. If you live near a factory, live in an old building or live in a city you may experience breathing problems and not even know it. Ever cough a couple times a day for no reason? If you do this means you have an air quality problem. Breathing keeps all your cells alive, it's very important.
Please reply to this post with any questions or controversies you wish to discuss, I love a good conversation.

| Air Purification advice for residence |

My mother lives in a two-story condo in Orange County. The square footage is approx. 1500 to 1700 square feet. She has suffered from allergies. She is very sensitive. Sometimes her eyes just flare up and become red.
She has taken out all carpeting, and has replaced it with tile flooring downstairs, and wood flooring upstairs. That has helped. But still, I think there is more to be done to enhance the air quality.
Are there any specific air purifier machines that you would recommend. She wants something that is quiet, and will do a good job cleaning the air.
Also, she is an artist, and paints with oils in a section of her kitchen, and I know that is a special factor. She has considered switching from oil to other paints, but she loves her oil paints.
ONE: In general, any suggestions for her to keep the air clean?
TWO: Any special suggestions for her when she is using her oil paints?
THREE: What about bedding? How dangerous is it to have a mattress and pillow and bedding that is not by an "organic" company? Should we all take our mattresses that we bought at Costco (before we were environmentally conscious) and the like, and just toss them and start over? How dangerous is sleeping on that sort of bedding?
Thank you so much!!

American Clay is amazing for indoor air quality. Especially for chemically sensitive people. This interior clay plaster will help so much. It is mold resistant and is negatively charged so dust and dander willnot be attracted to the walls. It is 0 VOC and completely natural. It will also absorb sound and odor. Look at the website americanclay.com
Go to the website and click on "where to buy" and you can find a retailer in your area.

| Check out American Clay- americanclay.com- this is a 0 VOC inyterior clay plaster that is negatively charged and creates great indoor air quality. This is also mold resistant, absorbs odor and sound, It is also 100% natural. The great thing about this product is that it actually cuts down on energy use in the home and helps clean the air. It is also moisture controlling. Air purifiers are great but use energy. Also, this is the most beautiful product with 40 standard colors and can be custom colored. It has made a huge difference in my home!!!

| i have tried the living air purifiers and hepa filter air purifiers I have not seen a great change. I do not use the living air one as it seemed to give me a sore throat. I live near the ocean in a city population of 49,936 for the year 2000. So for me, it may be the humidity. So then I wonder what is better the A/C (not being real green) or the fresh if you want to call it fresh air? The A/C cuts some of the humidity down but???....

My partner and I are loving "Big Ideas for a Small Planet" but we continually ask ourselves the same question...especially after the Eat episode: How do you do this on a Very Limited Income?
We are barely scraping by as it is, with a food budget of 140/week for 5 adults....Beef for $6.50-$10.00 a pound would mean not eating. So how do we switch to Non factory farmed meat when it's not available at a reasonable price? Not eating meat isn't an option for us as well, for health reasons. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I am not a nutritionist, but an individual interested in preparing low-cost, heart-healthy meals myself. It looks like your question focuses on red meat. But I am going to go a bit further, and ask you some questions, in case you are interested.
What stores are near you? Trader Joe's? Henry's? Whole Foods? Are you interested in turkey at all? Jenny-O Turkey meat is very good, and heart healthy. Or are you just interested in red meat? Does someone in your household actually cook meals, or do you buy prepared meals to carry out? I would think others, as myself, would want to give you some feedback. Maybe you could give us a little more information. Perhaps you could give us an idea of what a typical weekly menu is for the five of you, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have a very good recipe for a turkey meatloaf that costs very little to make, and is very tasty and heart healthy. Would you be interested in having people send you some recipes? Maybe you are not interested in that at all, but if you are, I would think a lot of people would be happy to share recipes with you. Do you like bean dishes? I make a black bean soup that is very good and costs very little to make. Take care!

| have you considered purchasing meat by the whole or half animal? Many sustainable, responsible farms offer this option, for beef, pork and lamb. The only thing you need is a decent sized freezer, and it's well worth the investment. Check out eatwellguide.com to find farms near you, and then contact farmers directly to see if they do sales by whole or half. It makes lots of sense financially and farmers like it too.

Depending on where you live you can raise your own meats, chickens, rabbits, etc. If you are confied how far are you from where you can work out a deal to raise pigs, or even cows.
It probably may be a struggle to get started but with a little will power it can be done.
Also this would give you a good chance for compost and raise a lot of your own food. What about growing fruit trees. They are cheap and in about three years you will have more than you can eat. You can either market them, trade them, or even sell them. Whawt do you have a market for them plant them and see the harvest come in. Here I have a market for persimmons, I have two trees. and this years I musst have had at least 500/759 persimmons. Small ones are retailing for $.35 so if I wholesale my larger ones I should get at least $ 25 each.

| further to my earlier msg have you thought of raising your own fish. you can obtain old pools for little cost. I bought one with all the assesories 18 ft in diameter 5 feet deep for 200 dollars. If you do not have the space go to google and put in - raising fish in a barrel - . It tells you how to raise catfish. Years ago I raise gold fish in a barrel. Even here in the south I had two feet of ice, when it melted there were my gold fish. You may want to do this for the children as they live off of the algea!!

| We are finally ready to do it. We want to buy a small solar cabin and some land in rural Mississippi. Why Mississippi - it's beautiful, low cost of living, low taxes, and we can invest in a region that is still unspoiled. Our only challenge is finding an ecologically sound cabin that is equipped with solar. I saw in Mother Earth news that there are new solar panels that fit in metal roofing. Looked interesting. Does anyone know of a source for a prebuilt or modular cabin? Can't wait to really try simple living in a big way. We've been compacting, this is the obvious next step. Nikki

Hi Rich,
Just joined this discussion group and saw your posting. I don't know of any company in the Chicago area -- you may have already found someone (and if so, I'd love to know who it is as well), but I have a sustainability consulting company in the Washington DC area that does the type of work you're looking for. Would be happy to speak with you further about it if I can be of any help. The website is: www.eco-coach.com. Best of luck!

[b]I have seen a lot of programs on eletrical cars. We in the the La. Baton Rouge area are being placed with a heavy burden on our electricity rates. We have Entergy and they have the government Public Service Commission (PSC) in their pockets. Recently we have been hit with a surcharge of over 100%. Now they are making a big deal about giveing us a 10% rebate over ex amount of years.
Question - I saw where they have a car that runs on air. First you need a energy to commence the power source. Then if goes into compressing air which in turns runs a generator etc to make electricty.
My question is can some one give me an idea of this technology. I would like to know what the steps are, a schmatic, or a run through the steps.
Any assistance given is appreciated. Thanks God Bless

| Hybrid cars are part electric part gasoline but the electric part is from specialized batteries that are automatically charged as you drive the car, you never have to plug them in. To replace some or all of your electric needs- can you consider a windmill or solar panels to replace some of your electric needs? Good luck with going greener

Thanks for your post. I doubt if I have enough wind to run a windmill as here in so. la. the land is flat. I was wondering if I could use solar power to connect a went power generator with a vacuum.
Also I have a water well that has a two inch line. Could I use solar power to run it and connect the water on a return to the well.
THanks

Are you trying to pump water? I am new here(right out of the box) and I see what you have written the same thing several times? If you are doing anything with water I may have one of those "crazy ideas" that really does work if you can look past its name.
The printing in "Terms of Use" was too tiny for me to read, as it what I am typing. Please excuce any errors, not all the keys on this pad work correctly.
I will do my best to find a way to return here, but if I can not, please hunt for me.

| Going Green High School Style |

My name is becca and I live in MA. We are opening a new high school in the fall and I am trying to get my principal to "go green". The problem: we have major budget cuts that are being exectued (firing valuable teacher, cutting back on EVERYTHING) I wrote a proposal and I dont know how to get my principal (who is very conservative) to agree with it when we have no money to invest in ANYTHING. recycled paper is more expensive, not using styrafoam is more expensive, using bamboo clothing instead of cotton is more expensive
That is my dilemma
Also I was at earthfest on Saturday and the sundance channel gave out bamboo shirts which are the most comfortable things i have ever worn. I was wondering where I can purchase them and if i can buy them customized

Good for you that you are insisting on change in your school! Maybe you could try easing your principle into being green with things that are free, like starting a recycling program. This could actually generate extra revenue for your school and that could be used to offset the cost of recycled paper and Styrofoam cup alternatives.
A great place to find green products is Pristine Planet [www.pristineplanet.com]. It’s an eco friendly comparison shopping engine so you can browse dozens of retailers, compare prices and read & write product reviews. They have a nice selection of apparel including bamboo clothing.

| Where to begin. There are several ways you can save money immediately so your principal will warm up to the ideas. The cost of heating and cooling, supplying electricity and water, etc. are going to be things you can tackle immediately. Install ceiling fans to reduce cooling costs. Turn fans in opposite direction in winter to pull warm air down and save on heating costs. Passive solar designs of buildings blocks sun in summer and brings light in winter which saves on heating and cooling. You can place awnings over windows to get this effect (sun is high in summer, lower in winter). Next, install compact flourescent bulbs or flourescent lighting. This uses 60-70% less energy. Install sensors in every room that turns off lights automatically when not in use. Plug any possible electric equipment into power strips. Unplug overnight or when not in use. Electronics and appliances still use 40% of their power even when not in use if they are plugged in. Unplugging these items will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year. I could keep going but, lastly install low flow faucets and toilets to reduce water consumption by hundreds of thoudsand of gallons per year. Good Luck!!!

Here is another GREEN idea for you which will save your school a considerable amount of money. Printers and ink toners, seem to eat up a budget in no time. I have paired up with a company in my area called Chicago Office Products. I would purchase regular ink toners and cartridges ranging from 50.00 to 150.00 (brand name) and would purchase about $1,700.00 per month in inks. That would be about $20,400.00 per year on the low end. That is a lot of money going out the window or on to paper that soon would be thrown away by students. So now what we do is purchase, recycled ink toners that cost a half the price we were paying before, and for every cartridge that we return we get between a $2.00 - $4.00 credit.
As for paper, or recycled paper I am currently only paying 29.00 per case which is a great price. Good companies will price match to keep your business, especially when you purchase in high volume.

| Studies have proven that occupancy sensors for lighting don't save electricity in school classrooms because teachers turn lights off before the sensor does. Raise awareness so all teachers continue this tradition.

1. see if you can get tree saplings for free from Arbor Day Foundation & plant them to shade the building (cutting down heating & cooling costs). Make it a school project where lots of classes & kids can get involved. Have several kids bring their shovels from home. The trees can even be dedicated to past teachers or alumni.
2. start a school recycling program & have the students collect aluminum cans from home. Occasionally take them to a scrap metal salvage place to make money to fund other green endeavors.
3. Encourage fellow students to do the following by posting flyers, sending out emails, or any other mode of communication you may have that's already in place & free:
-Take your lunch in a reusable lunch box, or cloth bag instead of paper bags..
-Recycle any packaging in your lunch box.
-Pack a cloth napkin instead of paper one. You can reuse it! Just count all your school days...that's how many paper napkins you saved.
-Cover your books in recycled paper bags or wrap... decorate them yourself, they could look fun and you might start a trend!
-Use up last years school supplies before you buy new ones.
-Use the reverse side of scrap paper for your first drafts of writing, art and math projects.
-Keep a "craft box" of discards you think might be handy for class projects during the year...mark it "my craft box" so no-one will mistake it for trash! Keep things like empty yogurt containers, elastics, string etc...that might interesting and useful for your art.
-Take the bus or Car pool with friends...it's fun to go to school in groups and you save lots of gas!.
4. start a compost-all you'll need is a couple of buckets or large bowls (one for students to put compostables in & one for the prep staff that prepares lunch) to put compostable items into & a flyer stating what can be composted right above the bucket until people get the hang of it. When lunch is over everyday just take the compost materials out to a spot on school property & start your compost pile. The stuff breaks down really fast & can be used (if turned properly) for fertilizer for any plantings the school may have.
5. here is a great resource for more information on low cost things that your school could try: http://gogreeninitiative.org/PDF/PlanningGuide.pdf
Good Luck Becca! It's so nice to see someone so young that cares about the environment!

| I admire your taking the initiative in wanting a green school. Though the issues were different when I was a student, the vehicle I found to work best in advocating change was thru student government. And the most effective way to get approvals from the administration was to make a proposal and submit it with "Signed Petitions" from students, parents, teachers and your community. In your proposal, when outlining a problem always include your solutions. If you can, include implemtation and assessment plans. That way they have less to think about - you've done all the (their) work! And take the credit. You can put it on your resume. Your already on the right track. Make several copies and make presentations to the school board, congressman, etc. In our school district, students are required to complete 30 hrs of community service in order to graduate, maybe you can organize a club, or have an existing club take part in planning to speed things up. When I was in 4th grade, girls (staff included) had to wear skirts or dresses only. I liked to play sports during recess, so I changed the rules via petitions. The teachers were so happy! We could wear pantsuits and change into Levis for recess. In 7th grade, I convinced admin to allow candy to be sold in the student store. As sophomore prez, it was off campus passes for lunch. Those petitions were also signed by fast-food stores, neighborhoods around the school, parents and the dean. So you can turn your thoughts into action and make it happen. Good Luck Becca. I'd love to see your proposal so I can present it to our school districts.

| Becca - you may want to contact the sun dance channel. a while back they had a program and an albertson store had solar panels placed on it for no cost. They installed the panels with a contract for so month a month to produce electricity. From what I gathered albertson had to sign a contract for x amount of dollars for x amount of years. In this way they knew their cost for electricity each month.

| I live in a condo and don't have curbside recycling. I drive my recyclables once a week to a site. However, like most drop-off sites they don't take #5 plastics (containers for yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) I can only reuse so many of these so they end up in the trash. Is there somewhere I can go or mail them. Also, if I do have to mail them somewhere isn't there a fuel trade-off or something since it will be shipped.

| So my father insists on using paper plates and plastic cups many times more than using the real glasses and plates. He is lazy and doesn't want to do the dishes. I get yelled at sometimes for using a glass insead of a disposable plastic cup. He claims that he is giving people jobs by buying up a bunch of these disposable items, like more people to harvest trees or something. He then claims it requires less energy than a dishwasher and it is a waste of precious water. I say he is full of shit. How do I get him to stop buying all these paper plates and plastic cups?

| What about a large vaccum to blow our garbage into outer space. Create an enourmous hose streching from the ground to the edge of the atmosphere and suck all the garbage out and send it flying into some unlimited space, or how about when the waters are rising, suck up that extra water and send it flying into outer space. CAN WE DO IT.

| No, Nature mom, you make me laugh, don't you know what space is? It is just empty nothing, there would be no great threat posed, it is like throwing a quarter in to the ocean. We already have he capability, just make a, what is it like 30 miles to space, hose and once the other end hits space it is instantly a vacuum. I'm not saying that outer space is where we should put our garbage from now on, but there is a lot of trash that would be much better off once it is off of the Earths soil. And we could also use this 30 mile tube with around a 20 foot diameter to suck out all this extra water that soon will flood our coast.

I wanted to make it availible to any and all who have a used oil issue with their company's,city', school districts, that our Reos system will process on site any and all
used oil and cooking oil to a usable diesel fuel. Our web-site is www.reossystems.com.
Currenly the U.S generates 1.5 billion gallons of used oil. All of this can to processed
to a cleaner, lubricated, higher btu diesel fuel.
We are also in need of advertizeing $$$$ Yes, this system was born in a garage since 1995.
What we are lacking is exposure which is exspensive. We are open to any suggestions.

| I saw your program on sundance. My husband asked me to find out info on creating a biodiesal station in CA. Do you know about the laws for CA (San Diego) emmissions and regs? I think we have the most anal state when it comes to building permits. You said in your show that it works in any diesel car. Does the tank have to be empty? Or any modifications required? I want to try it on my Dad's mercedes while he's out of town, but don't want to get in trouble if it doesn't run the norm, or if there's excess smog. I noticed on your show that when you started your car at the race, there was a lot of smoke. Was it due to cold weather? Or from the tailpipe? I believe you'll do well. (Make sure you copyright/patent your system, if you haven't already, so it can't be stolen. My brother's an inventor too - I think all it requires is that you put your ideas and plans on paper, seal it in an envelope and mail it back to yourself, certified, and don't open it. If I'm wrong, maybe someone out there can put you on the right track to get your business.) Put your proposal on paper and find a grant to get advertising $$$,get someone, a student maybe to help you create a great package and marketing plan too. Students are a great source. Also, SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives), another great source. I love your idea!

| I use my clothes that are too wore out, stained, etc to donate to wrap my fragile seasonal items & other breakables that are about to go into storage for the season. Just make sure if they have buttons, zippers, etc, that you face those out away from the item to avoid making any scratches on the fragile item. Works great! Easier than tissue paper or bubble wrap & if they get a little dirty while in storage, just throw a full load in the washer & they'll be fresh for when you go to use them again! Just make sure all clothing is washed & clean before putting into storage as some stains (untreated/unwashed) could attract moths or other unwanted pests that could do damage.

| Leather |

|
This is a green question more than a moral question (we eat meat--organic feed, hormone free, sustainably raised, etc.--and we do wear some clothes/shoes containing leather).
We are now looking to buy some new furniture, and love the look of leather, but I am squeamish about how the leather comes into the market as a product (from old animal hide? or animals raised specifically to kill and skin for mass market?) and the green impact, if any, of using leather. This would include products that might be used to treat the leather at the factory as well as products we would need to clean it after purchase.
All thoughts welcome.

| You are right to be squeamish about leather. The amount of energy, water, and natural resources to produce leather is...ENORMOUS never mind the transportation costs. Consider something unique: USED FURNITURE. More than 17 billion pounds of furniture is tossed into landfills each year. You can do your part to help reduce this amount by going vintage. It's often less expense too!

michaels custom built upholstery [michaelsupholstery.com]
hi I've been in the upholstery business for 30+ years,
one of my leather companies told me that all there leather hides were by-products and aniline chrome dyed. I have only one source for vegetable dyed leather from Europe but I have not worked with it yet .
also blog tkostigen is correct about old furniture going to the dump. older furniture is build 10x better than most new furniture today (plywood and polyurethane ) which means glues and oil products. old frames also have 8 way hand tied springs, but best of all they can be restyled and updated, recycling would use less energy certified wood or reclaimed wood because it already built.

Leather: No Friend of the Earth
Raising animals for food and leather requires huge amounts of feed crop and pastureland, water, and fossil fuels. Animals on factory farms produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population, without the benefit of waste treatment plants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has even acknowledged that livestock pollution is the greatest threat to our waterways.
Although some leathermakers deceptively tout their products as "eco-friendly," turning skin into leather also requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based. Most leather produced in the U.S. is chrome-tanned; all wastes containing chromium are considered hazardous by the EPA. Tannery effluent contains large amounts of pollutants, such as salt, lime sludge, sulfides, and acids. The process of tanning stabilizes the collagen or protein fibers in skins so that they actually stop biodegrading so that leather doesn't rot right off your feet. Additionally, to raise the animals whose skin eventually becomes leather, trees are cleared to create pastureland, vast quantities of water are used, and feedlot and dairy-farm runoff create a major source of water pollution. Huge amounts of fossil fuels are consumed in livestock production. (By contrast, plastic wearables account for only a fraction of the petroleum used in the U.S.)
People who work in and live near tanneries suffer too. Many are dying from cancer caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to process and dye the leather. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the incidence of leukemia among residents in an area near one tannery in Kentucky was five times the U.S. average. Arsenic, a common tannery chemical, has long been associated with lung cancer in workers who are exposed to it on a regular basis. Studies of leather-tannery workers in Sweden and Italy found cancer risks "between 20% and 50% above [those] expected."
Wearing leather hurts animals, the environment, and the people who produce it. The only ones who benefit are the people who profit from the misery and suffering of others.

Synchronized traffic lights
With the worry about global warming and oil shortage it seems like some small steps that could
help are being ignored. Computerization (although could be done without) for at least some over-all
basic traffic light synchronization would not be to expensive or hard to do. Save oil and cut down
on traffic congestion and an incentive to drive the speed limit.

By the way, I want to watch more Robert Redford movies, I really liked "The Last Castle", "Unfinished Life", Horse Wisperer", all his films, his interview on Bravo. The first time I saw him was in "Big Halsey...", "The Way We Were" and "Downhill Racer" He's my favorite actor/director/activitst. How can I obtain a collection of all his works? Mr. Redford, you're doing a wonderful thing with this progect and are most respected by not only me, though my respect for you is a daily thing. You'll be a saint. Pls reply to my e-mail, since I broke my back skiing in '93, I've not been able to keep up with internet progress. Thank you. I'll keep watching your channel.

I was abosuletly amazed when I went from using 17.1 miles per gallon (MPG) to 19.7 MPG. It took going through three fill-ups before I received my maximum savings, but it worked. | I have a few questions about going green!! |
Posted on Jul 11 2007 at 1:21pm by zzgwest10
|
I am hoping someone will read this blog, and answer my questions about how to become more "Green Friendly" to the best of their ability. So, here it goes...
The following questions are centered on eco-friendly practices every person can do, in order to better the earth:
1. I read that Bamboo can act as a natural "air conditioner". So, I live in a two-story house, and the cold air from the vent (when the air is on) doesn't seem to make it to my room very well - my room is much warmer than the rest of the house (the second floor is hotter than the firs floor, by much!!).
IF I were to put a "flower box" outside of my window (my window is the only one that seems to get sunlight, and we don't have a tree planted in front of my window to block the hot sun), and plnted Bamboo in the box, would it cutdown on the warmness of my room? Or, would I have to plant bamboo all around my house to have it work? I would like to plant it in a flower box right outside my second-story window, if it will work...?
2. I drive a 2001 Toyota Echo. It runs on Unleaded Gas. I would like to switch and use E85 gas, but is there any way to convert my Echo to hold E85 gas? I read that all it takes is a few valves changed, and some hoses put in place, but that I ould do it myself. Is this true? If it is, does anyone know exactly how to do it (the steps to convert)?
3. I would like to purchase a home desk unit to put at home, but I don't have a lot of money to spend (on a very tight budget). Do you know of home furnishing companies that sell recycled/plastic furniture, AND are affordable? I have a budget of about $250 dollars to spend. HELP!!!
And, my last question - at least for now - is:
4. I live in Ohio, so do you know of any GOOD, proactive environmental groups in Ohio that I could join and voluteer my time?
Hopefuly someone can answr these questions. See ya, and have a great day!

I recommend getting involved with a local watershed group. There are many across ohio. Working to protect the local river and community is very worthwhile and you can see the results quicker than in some big national thing. Most all of it is done by volunteers. My group is in Columbus area and we will be posting soon to the green map on this website.
This advice could work for anyone anywhere, really. Everyone lives in a watershed, that drains to some river or stream. Learn about it and your local community. Ohio's rivers are its treasures, corridors of green that connect us all.

| GREEN ARTIST RETREAT |

I though perhaps someone here could point me in the right direction.
My grandmother owns a 92 acre farm in Missouri. She needs to sell it to pay off the medical bills my grandfather left behind when he died last year. The land has been in my family for over 100 years. She has offered it to me for an extremely reasonable price and I intend to buy it. My plan in to turn it into a self-sustaining artist retreat (I graduated with a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, so the arts are a very important part of my life).
Perhaps more importantly, I want to make it a source of renewable energy by installing wind turbines on part of the land, and supplying eco-freindly power to not only the farm itself, but also the surrounding communities. The land is currently part of the CRP conservation program and is not being farmed. I also plan to do some green remodeling of the existing house and to build studios and cabins for artists to use during one to eight week residencies.
I know the end result I wish to achieve, but I know not where to begin. I'd be grateful for any advice you may have to offer. Are there foundations, agencies, companies, or individuals who would contribute to such a project? I'm working on my business plan at the moment, but I need the initial funding fairly soon to secure the deed to the land.
Thank you so much for your time and input.

Hi, Kristie,
What an awesome idea you have! And since it bears some resemblance to an idea I'm working on for the Neighborhood of the Arts in Rochester, NY, we may be able to help each other out.
Although I am no expert in fundraising, I have worked on many grant-funded art projects and am a founding member of the board of directors of a small local non-profit called South East Arts Development. Recently, I have directed my attention to researching funding sources for neighborhood energy initiatives. At this point, I've mainly come across sites describing state funding iniatives for renewable energy. This site is a good starting point:http://www.dsireusa.org/
Your plan is enhanced by its focus on the arts, at least, it would be if it were here in New York State, which has many sources of art funding. Not knowing the situation in Missouri, I can only suggest you look for regional or state arts councils and inquire there ASAP. I'll see if I can locate some for you....
Well, that was easy. Go here: http://www.missouriartscouncil.org/
Check out the funding programs. Believe it or not, these things can come together quite quickly. People who work at these organizations are very helpful and enthusiastic about new ideas like yours. Adding an educational or entertainment quotient, such as plans for an anual arts festival, tours, or workshops in wind power, for example, might strengthen your proposal and generate support from other avenues as well.
It has also been my experience that initiatives can be expedited by partnering with established community organizations, like a neighborhood group or an artist coalition. In fact, in these parts, it's nearly mandatory.
Hope this has been helpful. Wishing you success in your endeavor.

Thanks very much for your advice. And best of luck to you in your endeavor!
I have contacted the Alliance for Artists Communities and they are quite helpful as well.
