Actually I was a Sundance channel viewer 6 years ago when there was at least one queer movie on EVERY DAY in June — and they were all aired during primetime evening hours. In other words, not one movie one night a week at midnight. There were 8-10 feature premieres, batches of queer shorts, and during the last weekend of June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots there 4 or 5 features a day! I went out and bought a dish juswt to get Sundance for this annual festival.

There are more queer movies in any normal month now on Sundance than in this month of Pride. The numbers of films have steadily been reduced year after year until now it is a pathetic ghost of its past glory. To give you an idea of what we are missing, here are a few examples of actual programming from 2003:

      6/18/2003, Wednesday
4:00pm NIGHT WALTZ: Music of Paul Bowles
      9:00pm PRIEST
      11:00pm LAN YU
      2:45am BURNT MONEY

      6/20/2003, Friday
      THE COCKETTES
      SHORTS OUT LOUD #3
      THE DELTA

      6/23/2003, Monday
5:05pm NIGHT WALTZ: Music of Paul Bowles
9:00pm HERR SCHMIDT & HERR FRIEDRICH
      10:15pm TREMBLING BEFORE G-D

      6/28/2003, Saturday
3:00pm DEVIL IN THE HOLY WATER - 94 min
      8:45pm HERR SCHMIDT & HERR FRIEDRICH - 69 min
      10:00pm PRINCESA - 90 min

      6/30/2003, Monday
      8:30pm GENDER TROUBLE - 24 min
      9:00pm AMERICAN FABULOUS - 103 min
      12:30am LAN YU

And those are just some of the ones I wanted to see!

I would really like an explanation of why our festival was ever cancelled. I sent emails, even made phone calls and I never got an answer.

WHERE ARE THEY??? THIS WEBSITE HAS NO QUEER CINEMA "BLOCKS" ANYMORE, AND NO DETECTABLE MEANS OF LOCATING QUEER CINEMA OFFERINGS -- SUNDANCE USED TO DEDICATE ENORMOUS RESOURCES EVERY JUNE TO GAY PRIDE MONTH, BUT IT SEEMS TO HAVE LOST INTEREST IN THIS SUBJECT. IF I'M MISSING SOMETHING WITH REGARD TO LOCATING QUEER FILMS ON SUNDANCE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

I agree! This was a month I always looked forward to catching best of gay cinema. Just not enough new productions maybe?

Sundance should realize that young gay people are CONSTANTLY coming out and need to see these films. We depend on them to carry the flag.

Again I'm seeing frequent promos on the channel for gay programming in June, but absolutely NO reference to it in the E-guide (the cover is "Live From Abbey Road, which is on all year long)--nor any mention at all on the website, no link, nada.
I think they must have had gay people in senior management once upon a time, which would account for the fabulous Pride month programming they used to have. And they all got replaced with right-wing homophobes who want to keep the news of what little special programming they still offer us deep in the closet. Don't ask, don't tell.

You know I wish they'd sell the channel to Viacom so we can get a little respect again. It's fine to devote 50% of their schedule to eco-stuff, but many queer people are still battling to survive here and around the world. Gays in Iraq or Georgia or Nigeria are just as threatened as any animal species.
