I heard these characters we based on real people... Is that a common thing down in Australia? (I've never been). At first I thought it was kind of weird and then realized that shows like Seinfeld are based on real characters too, and no matter how off the wall they seem, they're based actual people (like the Soup Nazi). I was wondering if anyone has ever met anyone this off-the-wall this in real life? Stories people I want stories!

In the ladies' changing room at a Sydney beach just after Christmas my friend and I were innocently minding our own business when a couple of women came in. The non-expectant woman asked her friend if they had chosen a name for the baby. To which the mum-to-be replied,"Noooo, my husband and I cain't agree on a name. He doesn't like any of those m names, you know, Meegan, Mariah, and so on. I really only like m names." My firend 's eyes met mine and I could see we were both thinking the same thought: we're trapped in an episode of Kath and Kim. Yes, these are real Aussie types.

As an Australian from Melbourne, Kath and Kim are recognizable stereotypes kicked up a notch or three.

But oh! it's the male characters who are familiar!

My favourites are the grey-haired women (again Jane and Gina) in the gift shop. Their snobbery is so funny because that really happens. Their accents are exaggerated but you get the picture.

Especially good are the scenes at Brighton Beach in front of the changing boxes (privately owned cabins that cost the earth!).

This show is hilarious! The daughter, Kim, is a total bitchy loser while the mother, Kath, is a sexy sweetheart. Well, sexy in the context of the show. Kil, Kath's husband, is so freakishly embarrassing. He's all over Kath but he's yucky weird. It's no wonder he got dumped at the altar four times in a row before Kath married him.

I'm totally addicted to this show. Like the first post says, it's kind of the Aussie take on Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm. If you don't like those shows, you should still give Kath & Kim a shot. It really is funny.
