Boxed Wine Better For Environment

Much maligned in the popular culture of the 20th century, boxed wine was always the source for cheap alcoholic beverages. The trend is changing nowadays because wine makers committed to lowering their carbon footprint are looking for ways to make the much more sustainable box container a source of fine quality wine. So, does putting excellent vintages of wine in a box help to redeem the commercial viability of the boxed wine product?

Europe has supported this old way of transporting wine in a big way. The success of boxed wines in Europe may herald a growing U.S. receptability for the product. Boxes are better for the environment because they require less fuel to ship due to lower packaging weight and the ability to carry larger quantities of wine in one package. The packages are also cheaper than glass bottles, many of which escape recycling or reuse.

In terms of utility, the boxed products are great for wine lovers everywhere, because you can store the wine over a much longer period than a glass bottle which is only usable for 2 or 3 days after being opened.
