BIG IDEAS in School Classroom

The kids of Greensboro Day School display their team spirit as they work on their BIG IDEAS FOR A SMALL PLANET

Creating BIG IDEAS FOR A SMALL PLANET was a very challenging project to produce. The need to spread environmental awareness about the specific people and businesses who are working to positively reshape our world was the only inspirational fuel needed to overcome this challenge.

When real people watch BIG IDEAS FOR A SMALL PLANET on their TVs, portable media players and computers, it makes the creators of the series incredibly pleased. When some of those special people see the worth of a green idea, and decide to create their own methods of reshaping the trajectory of climate change, it makes Sundance Channel ecstatic. This is the short but sweet story of a school teacher named Clarissa Marshall and her 7th grade life science class.

After watching one episode of BIG IDEAS FOR A SMALL PLANET, Clarissa went to the iTunes Store and downloaded the whole season. She showed her life science class the entire season of the show. The kids must have found the experience to be entertaining and rewarding, since they decided to work on fleshing out their own BIG IDEAS.

Here is a video that provides a short overview of the life science BIG IDEA assignment.

Here is a video clip from the student Aleksa Kirsteins, whose idea explores the balance between life and death.

Since these are so much fun to watch, here is a second idea from student August Menzer, whose idea would save food manufacturers and retailers a bundle.

I am encouraged to see the next generation get involved. Hopefully, more schools will follow the lead of Greensboro Day School. It is critically important that the message expand to young people as they will be charged with the responsibility of continuing to find solutions to the planet's ills. I have tried to do my part by writing "Planet Earth Gets Well" in the hope that it will engender an early sense of environmental awareness. Congratulations Greensboro!
