Democracy, translated from ancient Greek as 'rule by the people', would best describe the foundation of North America. Differing from the Greek System of direct democracy, America's representative democracy has become a fractured landscape of states, regions, cities, counties, industries, and lifestyles. The representatives try to organize civic services in order to manage a nation that allows every American "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Americans get to have sustenance, accountability, transportation, laws, society and justice. The US government's track record for keeping America running and growing is excellent. However, the United States is simply too large for its national government to get a handle on the pollution that causes global warming and the extinction of species. Species extinction is something to be feared, as it means one more page in the living history of the world has died forever, and it can affect the food chain in unpredictable ways.
We have established that a representative democracy is good for sustaining the United States and its people, but by itself, not sufficient for climate balancing. Why talk about global warming when you can discuss climate balancing? We just need to adjust the balance of the climate system, and as consumers with free will, we can do just that.
Think about all the products that are bought, shipped, stored, sold to people; none of that would happen without the consumer. If you had the choice between a laundry detergent that could damage the habitat of a living creature and one that would not, which would you choose? Keep in mind the detergent does not necessarily cost more. The ultimate power to combat global warming exists in the wallet of all people with money, specifically consumers. The consumer is the last step in the chain, the part that industry falls apart without. As one of the largest economies in the world, the consumers of the United States have tremendous potential to change the way products are made around the world.
This is why every person on the planet could utilize their power to affect the world around them simply by deciding to buy green. Respect for and knowledge of the green possibilities of consumption and waste recycling, reuse and disposal are valuable tools in the very important mission of climate balancing.
