"The scientific study of the distribution and abundance of living organisms and how the distribution and abundance are affected by interactions between the organisms and there environment. The environment of an organism includes both physical properties, which can be described as the sun of local abioic factors such as insolation (sunlight), clime and geology, as well as the other organisms that share its habitat. The term oekologie was coined in 1866 by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel. The word is derived from the Greek Olkos (household) and Logos (study); therefore "ecology" means the "study of the household [of nature]." The word "ecology" is often used in common parlance as a synonym for the natural environment or environmentalism. Likewise “ecologic” or "ecological" is often taken in the sense of environmentally friendly." Wikipedia [en.wikipedia.org].
Ecology refers to the life system on a planet, and since earth is the only planet with life, it is the study of life on earth. Ecology is a necessary field for humans to understand when they are attempting to make changes in the world, because ecology provides the many organisms upon which human survival depends. If there were no plants to make clothing, or no animals to eat, how would humanity survive? In this case the answer is clear; humans would become extinct without ecology.
