Louis Vuitton is set to unveil its latest artist collaboration next week and sure enough Marc Jacobs has managed to marry good taste with high art. For this latest turn, Yayoi Kusama’s surreal use of polka dots will be featured as a capsule collection scheduled to launch in two phases between July 10 and October. The first launch will be an array of limited-edition clothing and accessories such as pajamas, a trench coat, separates and jewelry that will coincide with a retrospective of Kusama’s work at the Whitney Museum of American Art opening July 12, as well as the exhibition already on view at London’s Tate Modern.

In Takashi Murakami’s exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in London, he stakes his claim as the first person to represent “the Japanese male sexual complex” in life-size form. He’s referring to his sculptures “Miss Ko” (1997), “My Lonesome Cowboy” (1998) as well as a flock of new life-size 3D renderings of those 2D sexual hangups (animation, games, etc.) like “3-Meter Girl” (above), currently on view.

“Murakami Versailles” opens today at the 17th-century French palace, and surprise, surprise: some French are offended. This year we’ve already seen one pop princess (Christina Aguilera) reemerge from hiding only to be written off as a Gaga-wannabe past her prime. This was a shame as Xtina’s album had brilliant highs and it just seems she was a victim of Gaga’s power over the press.

Now we ready ourselves for Britney Spears’ comeback. And while Spears has always been more likable than Aguilera, and was never one for put-on art/fashion reference, the news about, and accompanying images for, her cover shoot for Japan’s POP Magazine seem a bit desperate, no?
