It’s possible that a movie like James Ponsoldt’s SMASHED takes on a special resonance at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s a film about a hard-partying married couple — Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead — whose lives are turned upside down when one of them decides to get sober. During Sundance, Park City is practically swimming in booze. Client dinners, cocktail parties, after-parties; there are working distilleries pouring less alcohol than this town right now. It’s probably safe to assume a hefty percentage of the people watching SMASHED were drunk when they watched it. Is it any wonder the critics dug it so much?

You were probably expecting a laugh fest when you saw the names Octavia Spencer, Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul for the film SMASHED. Sorry, it’s a drama. But, that doesn’t mean there were not laughs aplenty when they all stopped by Sundance Channel HQ for a chat. Check out the entire video of their conversation, but just a warning…it includes some off color jokes, in addition to more serious fare on how films are cast in Hollywood.

In one day we met a porn star, an ingenue and the first couple of TV comedy. One of the beauties of Sundance is the wide variety of cinematic choices you get as a film fan and that same spectrum of folks stops by our humble abode on Main Street. Today we met with Josh Radnor and Sundance Sophomore Elizabeth Olsen of LIBERAL ARTS. The amazing cast of SMASHED also stopped by and, believe me, getting Octavia Spencer, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul in one room is both tough and hysterical. Tim & Eric, along with folks from WEST OF MEMPHIS and EXICISION, also stopped by, so check out all of the galleries below to make sure you don’t miss any of the action from Main Street:

As one of the stars of Breaking Bad, if Aaron Paul’s acting like he’s under the influence of a controlled substance, it’s usually meth. But in the Sundance ’12 U.S. Dramatic Competition film SMASHED, Paul trades in the crank for the drank. He plays Charlie, one half of a young married couple who love to have a good time and get absolutely hammered. But when Charlie’s wife Kate (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) realizes she needs to get sober, it not only changes her life, it changes their marriage as well.

So many Parks and Recreation cast members have films at Sundance ’12 you’d think the Pawnee Parks Department was holding a winter company retreat in Park City. Ann, April, Ben, and the great Ron Swanson all appear in Sundance selections this January, though if you bump into any of them walking down Main Street they probably would appreciate it if you referred to them by their real names.
