Sundance Institute announced today the films selected to screen in the out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “We are pleased to see a number of returning filmmakers in our Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections, indicating that there is sustainability, longevity and personal reward to careers in independent film. The films announced today build on each filmmaker’s personal artistic legacy and contribute to the ever-growing and inspiring achievements of the independent film community.”

Swedish scientists recently discovered a way to help predict whether a mother-to-be will need a C-section. This could save women painful and possibly dangerous hours attempting a doomed vaginal delivery.
Esteban Rojas, one of the thirty-three Chilean miners who has been stuck underground for 20-some-odd-days (and counting), proposed to his long-time girlfriend. The proposal was written on a piece of scrap paper the miner stuck through a small hole in the tumbled rock.

Each January, as the Sundance Film Festival approaches, there’s a mad scramble among journalists and critics to pinpoint something, anything new to differentiate their articles from the ones they wrote last year—and usually they turn to the documentaries for their hook. One year it’s LGBT issues, another year it’s Iraq. This year, the festival’s 25th anniversary (well, since the Sundance Institute took over its management anyway), the popular “news hook” is the environment. By way of evidence, writers point to the number of environmental docs in competition this year: 5 out of 32 total. But I just looked at last year’s film guide and counted three environmental docs. From 3 to 5—not such a dramatic increase, is it?

If something goes wrong during your screening, it’s always good to have a song in your back pocket. So when John Carney’s [www.imdb.com] once ran into projection problems Sunday night, the two leads Glen Hansard [www.imdb.com] and Marketa Irglova [www.imdb.com] took to the stage to entertain the audience as the theater fixed the mechanical problem. How apropos, since ONCE is a musical — or as director Carney calls it “video album” — about the musical relationship between Czech immigrant and local Dublin boy. After the projector was fixed and the film played, the duo returned to stage for the Q&A — and some more songs.
