The cast of LIBERAL ARTS is like the independent film version of a rock and roll supergroup. You’ve got your road-tested veterans, Richard Jenkins and Allison Janney, and two of the hottest talents to come out of Sundance in recent years: Elizabeth Olsen from MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE and writer/director/star Josh Radnor, whose HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE won the Sundance audience award back in 2010. And, yeah, Zac Efron’s in there too. Admittedly, he sabotages the theory just wee bit.

With the clock winding down on Sundance ’12, the market for distribution titles is starting to look like a domino course. Once the first couple titles fell, they all started to fall. We’ve got a lot of news since our last roundup, so let’s get to it.

The latest domino to drop is V/H/S, the found footage horror anthology from a whole mess of directors including Adam Wingard (YOU’RE NEXT), Joe Swanberg (SILVER BULLETS), and Ti West (THE INNKEEPERS). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Magnolia Pictures picked the film (which is supposedly so intense that it made several audience members pass out) for approximately $1 million. Their plans for V/H/S are said to include a video-on-demand preview and then a theatrical release and then, I imagine, a kitschy release on VHS.

I’ll admit it. I don’t like that song one bit, but seeing Richard Jenkins (LIBERAL ARTS, Six Feet Under) sing along to Jason Mraz at his premiere party the other night certainly warmed my cockels. Celebrities, they’re just like us! They record their favorite acoustic performances on their iPhones!

Two years ago, a tiny movie from a first-time filmmaker about a group of young, attractive New Yorkers struggling to balance their various romantic entanglements and impending adulthood, surprised festivalgoers by winning the coveted Audience Award at Sundance. Written and directed by Josh Radnor, best known as the lead on the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE won over audiences in Park City, Utah. And his sophomore feature, LIBERAL ARTS, elicited a standing ovation at the press and industry screening I attended.

Josh Radnor’s LIBERAL ARTS got a standing ovation at its premiere here in Park City. And with an ensemble cast including Allison Janney (THE HELP), Elizabeth Olsen (MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) as well as Radnor himself, it’s no surprise. The How I Met Your Mother star wrote and directed the film and it marks his second trip to Sundance as a triple-threat. Like that 2010 effort, happythankyoumoreplease it’s a sweet story…which is a nice change to all of the ‘Year of the Bummer’ films we’ve seen at this year’s festival. We stopped by the premiere party and caught up with Elizabeth Olsen to get the lowdown on her sophomore Sundance and working with some acting legends.

In one day we met a porn star, an ingenue and the first couple of TV comedy. One of the beauties of Sundance is the wide variety of cinematic choices you get as a film fan and that same spectrum of folks stops by our humble abode on Main Street. Today we met with Josh Radnor and Sundance Sophomore Elizabeth Olsen of LIBERAL ARTS. The amazing cast of SMASHED also stopped by and, believe me, getting Octavia Spencer, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul in one room is both tough and hysterical.
