A Q&A with Meera Sethi

Article: A Q&A with Meera Sethi

I stumbled upon the work of artist Meera Sethi at Bombay Electric in Mumbai. I love her use of colors and her modern take on Indian garments. The Toronto-based Sethi answered some questions for me while she traveled India and as I returned from my third trip to that nation.

Your Firangi Rang Birangi series of paintings really caught my eye. Can you describe them to me?

The Firangi Rang Barangi — Hindi for “colorful foreigner” — works are a series of acrylic, pencil, and ink paintings on paper that foreground themes of femininity and hybridity through dress. In them I combine Eastern and Western textiles, garments, and jewelry in order to reimagine identity across borders.

These paintings make use of bold colors and patterns, layering cultural history with personal style. While the surface of these works draws us in, the bodies that they adorn are barely revealed — an inversion that suggests the role of sartorial expression in creating a sense of self, particularly one rooted in a diasporic, transnational experience.

Episode Recap – Between the Sheets – Not a Fairytale Ending

Article: Episode Recap – Between the Sheets – Not a Fairytale Ending

It’s true, fashion can be completely unpredictable, I will give you that. I never knew that when I entered into my venture with Layla and Josh, the dating duo from Between the Sheets, that our time together would have escalated into the finale that it did. I entered into it with the thought I could help BTS turn their business around by keeping what they do AND expanding into a burgeoning market at the same time. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite work out as planned. Which is too bad.

Episode Recap – Kara Janx – Don’t Just Say It. Do It.

Article: Episode Recap – Kara Janx – Don’t Just Say It. Do It.

What I Hoped She Learned: “Don’t just say it. Do it.” That was the thought that was running through my head as Kara and I prepped on the morning of our presentation with Neiman Marcus. Kara had promised me that she would re-cut a dress in a size 8 to show the Neimans buying team…

KARA JANX – REALITY STAR, REDISCOVERED – Tonight at 10p EST!

Article: KARA JANX – REALITY STAR, REDISCOVERED – Tonight at 10p EST!

I could lie and say there were many abstract reasons that led me to wanting to work with Kara Janx but I will be upfront and honest with you. I wanted to meet this Season 2 Project Runway alum, one who had no problem speaking her mind or dealing with confrontation. I wanted to meet the woman who infamously said “she would snip off a contestant’s pee-pee if he got in her way”. Ouch! She is, in short, the one designer I worked with this season, whom I would not want to encounter in a dark alley with those castrating scissors. But of course, I did also want to work with Kara because I realized her true potential while watching her on Project Runway.

Episode Recap – Bad is Better Than Boring

Article: Episode Recap – Bad is Better Than Boring

What I Hope They Learned:

“Being bad is better than boring.” I said this to Andre and Liquica in Times Square when we were on our outing getting inspiration and it’s something I truly believe. A friend fought me about this fact just the other day but for me, it’s true. I can find value in the good and the bad. If you think about fashion being your ultimate self-expression, then speak loudly and boldly. There’s no room for anything dull, because boring is exactly that – boring!

The Transformation Begins – Radenroro: Tonight at 10p EST!

Article: The Transformation Begins – Radenroro: Tonight at 10p EST!

Most weeks, the mail arrives at my office in large foam cartons, usually filled with lookbooks of every variety: large and spiral-bound; small and stapled, or even loose pictures in an envelope. You can only imagine how many collections I see each year.

Most of these are designers I’ve never heard of, but are begging to be discovered. That could be said of a certain lookbook I saw, one day at my desk, from the label, Radenroro. I was intrigued by – yes, the name – but more the art direction and image of the lookbook and some of the clothes in it, but most of it just looked unmemorable to me. In fact, I remember remarking to Keith Pollock, a good friend and the Editorial Director of Elle.com, that I could see girls shopping and wanting SOME of these clothes but not most of it.

Article: 7 minutes with The Sartorialist

This is a thoughtful and beautifully executed (much like his photos) 7 minute documentary and behind the scenes with Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist. It’s a treat for any fan of his work. I especially liked the moment in the short film when he asked to take a photo of a fashionably dressed woman. You…

Yak wool: the conscious cashmere?

Article: Yak wool: the conscious cashmere?

At the Source – Yaks, Nomads and the Himalayas from Khunu on Vimeo.

As the temperatures drop, you may be reaching for sweaters, jackets, and other garments made from some kind of wool… maybe lambswool, merino, or cashmere. If Julian Wilson and Aaron Pattillo have their way, yak wool may soon be a part of your cold weather fashion mix.

Wilson and Pattillo founded Khunu, a company that makes apparel from this unique material, in 2009. The two discovered yak wool while trekking on the Tibetan plateau, and recognized an opportunity both to introduce this soft, warm fiber to a larger market, and to create a business that supports the impoverished people of Tibet and Mongolia (their main sourcing areas). Launched as a social enterprise, the company purchases the wool at fair trade prices, and returns 2 percent of sales to the communities that supply the raw material.

Article: An opulent interpretation of the shoplifter's worst enemy

The fashion statement of leaving label and brand stickers on hats to show off its freshness goes to another extravagant level with Justin Gignac’s 18k-gold-plated sterling silver version of store security tags or “an opulent interpretation of the shoplifter’s worst enemy.” It also comes in a version with diamonds. Bikes as accessories: Freewheelers

Article: Bikes as accessories: Freewheelers

We greenies tend to view the bicycle in purely practical terms: as a low-carbon, healthy form of transportation. Nothing wrong with that… but also no reason we can’t promote biking as sexy. That’s the idea behind Babelgum’s Freewheelers, “a series of documentary portraits about hot-looking bikes and the people who ride them…”

Article: Braille bracelet wins Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum award

This silver Braille Alphabet Bracelet designed to teach braille won a People’s Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. It was designed by Leslie Ligon, a mother of a blind son. I was astonished at how few people actually know Braille, which makes educational things like this bracelet all the more important. According to…

I like this photo series “Creature Couture” by New York photographer Ted Sabarese where he juxtaposes female fashion models with artist (and also an Alvin Ailey-trained dancer) Nick Cave’s various “Soundsuits.” Over the last decade Mr. Cave has become known for making colorful, extravagant sculptures with this kind of double life: they can stand alone…

Recycled t-shirts: a new green fashion trend?

Article: Recycled t-shirts: a new green fashion trend?

When I wrote about t-shirt refurbisher Stay Vocal in September, I said this was the only company I knew of recycling t-shirts in this particular manner. Turns out the idea is out there… though still relatively under the radar. British green social media site Green Thing is now in the recycled t-shirt business: it’s SAVED initiative takes donated used shirts, adds some embroidery and other fun items, and then sells them.
