Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Entertainment are set to debut the highly anticipated sixth season of the critically acclaimed series ICONOCLASTS on Tuesday, October 9 at 8P. Each half-hour episode of the innovative six-part series, which will air on Sundance Channel, pairs two visionaries who come together to discuss their lives, influences, passions and creative processes.

Homosexuality is such a political hot potato these days — what with television shows about gay couples and surrogates popping up, and transsexualism being so popular amongst the youth — that people are drawing lines in the discussion. But polarization happens to be taking the place of the great gray space where, I think, most people’s sexuality resides. And that’s a drag. The uproar is having a negative effect with the absurd notion that being bi-curious is wishy-washy, not firm enough of a position for either side. Like, what ever happened to appreciating a good ol’ B.U.G.?
Sundance Institute today announced that its president and founder Robert Redford will present journalist and film critic Roger Ebert with the Vanguard Leadership Award in recognition of his advocacy of independent cinema. The award presentation will take place at the third annual “Celebrate Sundance Institute” benefit, on June 5, 2013, in Los Angeles.

Well, now (disobedient) dogs are in the meme spotlight. Dog owners have been submitting photos of their misbehaving pooches with signs explaining their misdeed over at Dog Shaming. Hey, dogs that dig through the trash: Just because you are known as “man’s best friend” doesn’t exclude you from taking responsibility for naughty behavior. That said, it is tough to stay mad too long at these dogs — aw, look at that face!
With all the backlash over “legitimate rape” vs. illegitimate (sic) rape last week, another great debate got a little lost in the shuffle: the gay-marriage debate between Dan Savage, sex columnist and married gay dad of one adopted son, and Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage and straight married father of seven biological kids.

When I (Em) was in Paris a few months ago, I couldn’t figure out why the bridge behind Notre Dame was covered in thousands of tiny padlocks (plus a few bike locks). They weren’t there when Lo and I visited back in 2004. A quick bit of Googling (thanks to “wee-fee,” as the French call wifi) and I learned that they were “love locks” — a fairly recent tradition wherein couples celebrate their love (and, perhaps, hope to ensure its survival) by affixing a padlock to a romantic bridge and tossing the key into the river below. They might also attach a ribbon to the padlock, or simply adorn it with their initials. When I was there, enterprising young salespeople were selling new padlocks at each end of the bridge in case you were moved to do the same.

Environmental regulations kill jobs. If companies didn’t have to spend money on such nonsense, they could afford to hire more people. That’s a consistent narrative coming out of the right-wing media in this country, and one that’s heavily promoted by various nonprofit organizations funded by Charles and David Koch (aka the Koch brothers). The brothers and their company, Koch Industries, have also paid out millions in lobbying expenses and contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians willing to fight various forms of environmental regulation.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, leading Republicans feared that John Lennon was going to be a threat in the 1972 election, thanks to his pop culture stardom and anti-war activism. They went on a quest to deport him in the hopes he wouldn’t influence the youth vote in the United States. Now here we are, 50 years later, and we’re still facing some of the same problems when it comes to fair and free elections. Except that instead of deporting the people who lead movements, the government has taken the war directly to the voters.
I find that the older I get, the more I hear my friends and peers express a general ennui with their careers. I suppose it’s understandable. It can be tough to go from “you can be whatever you want to be!” to “here’s your office and don’t leave until you finish that memo.” We all eventually get pigeonholed into a box of one kind or another (more on the box in a minute). Even at parties and social gatherings, it’s less about who we are as individuals and more about “what we do.”
Todd Akin made a simple mistake. When he said “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” he was obviously referring to ducks. And come on, who hasn’t on occasion confused the human female reproductive system with that of a duck?
As you might expect, I’ve got a soft spot for environmental activists: I love the passion they bring to their actions, and I respect their willingness to put themselves in sometimes-dangerous situations. But while street theater, march and sit-ins might have been all the rage in 1968, they don’t even make the local news anymore. And if media — any media — aren’t covering it, then the corporate targets of your activism aren’t paying attention.
