Final stage of the High Line made public
Had a chance to visit Manhattan’s High Line yet? If not, we’ve got you covered: we’ve been keeping an eye on this conversion of a railroad trestle into a park since its opening in 2009. But that opening didn’t represent the completion of the High Line; it was more of a launch, with more envisioned as time and money permitted. Last year, developers completed the project’s second section, and, last week, they released plans for part three at the Rail Yards.
Attendees at the Friends of the High Line community meeting saw the initial design concepts from architects James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Inhabitat’s Jessica Dailey has taken a look at these first plans, and noticed that in addition to standard design features such as wooden lounge chairs and peel-up benches, the new section will also incorporate a children’s play area, and a walkway built over the actual High Line itself at one point to allow visitors “to experience the railway in its natural state.”
New Yorkers who don’t get into “the city” much may have future options available for similar space: residents of Queens have proposed The QueensWay, a “3.5 mile greenway from Rego Park to Ozone Park” along the dilapidated Long Island Railroad Rockaway Beach Branch right-of-way. This one’s still very much in the idea stage, but lots of opportunities available to show your support and follow the project through various social media outlets.
