Vimeo of the Week: Hajj.. A journey of purity

Hajj.. A journey of purity | الحج .. رحلة نقاء from KDMart on Vimeo.

This film, Hajj.. A journey of purity | الحج .. رحلة نقاء, is just over 3 minutes but the amount of time packed into the video is startling. The filmmaker, Almuhannad Alkadam, also known as KDMart, filmed from various vantage points the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the largest pilgrimage in the world.

The film itself is quite simple. It captures the ebb and flow, in and out, of the pilgrims, speeding them up. This speed creates a film that spotlights the enormity of the event. The people appear to be ants, moving with great speed, sometimes not obvious human shapes. The final scene, shot from somewhere high above, shows the pilgrims swirling around the mosque. They look like the solar system, the universe, a circular movement.

His intention exactly: “that’s one of the meanings of this very special ritual where you become a part of the moving universe,” he said.
