Green tech finds (7/8/10)
Industrial hemp… you can’t smoke it, but, apparently, you can run your car on it. That and more at this week’s green tech finds.
- Recycle your iPod, buy an iPhone 4: Apparently, that’s what a lot of people are thinking. UK recyclables buyer MoPay has seen a 70% surge in iPod recycling since the release of the new iPhone. (via IT Pro Portal)
- The solar smart phone: Puma’s new smart phone can run on solar power, and displays how much energy a user is saving when in sun power mode. Unfortunately, it’s only available in Europe right now… (via Springwise)
- HP’s open source battery recycling: The computer company has donated three patents to the Eco-Patent Commons, an open source-like program, for a project aimed at developing battery recycling/exchange stations. (via eWeek Europe)
- Hydrogen from algae: Biofuels company Origin Oil claims it’s developed a process to harvest hydrogen from algae which “uses little or no external energy inputs, requires no sulfur deprivation or other ‘stressing’ of the algae, and no genetic modification.”
- 1000 square miles? That’s the land use requirements that Cleantechie’s Tony Seba would be needed to power every single car in the US through solar-generated electricity… much less than the land footprint of oil and gas.
- Dude, what’s running my car?: Willie Nelson loves hemp biofuel; Joe Laur of Greenopolis thinks you should, too…
- That’s so square: Austin, TX-based Illumitex has devised a square LED bulb that it claims will cut costs while delivering superior light quality compared to traditional round versions. See the GreenTechMedia video above for an explanation. (via Crisp Green)
- Europe up to 20% renewables: That’s what a new report from the European Commission’s Join Research Centre claims, with wind power leading the pack. (via Planetsave)
