1989 NYU student documentary, "Who is Chris Rock?"
From the documentary vault, the Internets uncovered possibly the earliest documentary profile on then up-and-coming, but relatively unknown controversial comic and occasional actor, Chris Rock. This 12 minute-long 1989 NYU student film interweaves clips from his (bitingly hilarious) stand-up performances with street interviews with random pedestrians. You also gets to meet his proud mother who expresses her initial unhappiness at her son’s side interest in stand-up comedy, instead of focusing on his studies. When asked “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” Chris Rock responds that he’ll hopefully be “doing some big concerts,” have a “deal with HBO,” and “lots of cable specials.”
