Looking for an environmental film festival? There's probably one nearby…
Miss this past weekend’s Far North Conservation Film Fest in Fairbanks, Alaska? Not to worry: green-themed film festivals are popping up everywhere around the country. Here’s just a handful of festivals devoted to environmentally-themed films.
- Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital: Washington, D.C.’s Environmental Film Festival celebrated its 17th anniversary with last March’s festival. During the twelve-day event, the festival screened 141 films to over 25,000 attendees.
- Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival: This Nevada City, CA festival bills itself as “the largest environmental film festival in the United States.” A production of the grassroots organization South Yuba River Citizens League, the festival is now accepting films for 2010.
- Princeton Environmental Film Festival: Sponsored by the Princeton Public Library, this festival has the lofty goals of “use film as a medium to encourage discussion about the environment, raise awareness about environmental concerns, and stimulate community action to develop and make more environmentally sustainable choices and create more livable communities.” Entries for the January, 2010 festival are due by September 1.
- Visions of Nature, Voices of Nature Environmental Film Festival: St. Petersburg, Florida’s Eckerd College has held this festival for eleven years now. No information available yet on next Spring’s event, but last year’s festival featured films from Werner Herzog and John Sayles, among others.
- Colorado Environmental Film Festival: Held in Golden, and presented by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education, you can still attend this festival this year. Looks like they’re still accepting entries; there’s also a photography exhibition that’s open for submissions.
Of course, it goes without saying that the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL has its own fair share of green films each year… and, even with that, we’re just scraping the surface. Is there a good film fest focused on the environment in your neck of the woods? Let us know in the comments…
