The X-Initiative

X is one of the most unique gallery spaces you’ll find in New York, a not for profit initiative that will exist for one year and show art in four phases. The next phase opens tonight with No Soul For Sale, a spectacular lineup of artists represented by “the most exciting, creative and respected not for profit centers, alternative institutions, artists’ collectives and independent enterprises from around the world,” most of which showcase art that isn’t otherwise accessible to New York.

The night’s schedule is jam packed from the ground floor to the roof with hourly performances and a mind-bogglingly broad range of exhibitions, beginning with “Pool Noodle Roof” which has taken over gallery’s rooftop, covering it with furniture made out of pool noodles that spell out bububluooopppp when viewed from above.

Personally, I’m going for The Ballroom Marfa‘s entry, Kaffe Matthews’ “Sonic Bed_Marfa.” It’s part of Matthews’ Music for Bodies project which focuses on the physicality of music, of feeling it through parts of your body besides literally with your ears. And to do this Matthews builds furniture through which to channel the music. “Sonic Bed_Marfa” is one in a series of purpose built portable venues which plays music, and acts as a sonic and social experiment for exploring our perception of sound. Visitors are invited to lie in the bed, and experience a unique composition by the artist, as the sound moves up and down and around their bodies via a twelve channel sound system hidden within the bed.” The X-Initiative , 548 West 22nd St. until June 28. Opening reception June 23 6-9 PM.
