Cara Phillips, Ultraviolet Beauties

Those of us living in New York City do not seem to have to worry ourselves about the negative impact of prolonged sun exposure on our skin this summer thanks to the seemingly unprecedented streak of rainy and cloudy weather as of late. Nonetheless I’m mesmerized by Cara Phillips’ series of portraits using ultraviolet photography with subjects randomly chosen from the streets of Manhattan.

These photographs offer patients a glimpse into a future of flaws that may one day appear. The filter allows us to see beyond the capacity of the human eye, the invisible. As an artist, I am fascinated by a technology that allows me to see inside of my subject, to see deeper than what a normal camera lens can record. To it is in the subject’s vulnerability, where I find a beauty that transcends the flawed and damaged surface.
