ABOUT
ASIA EXTREME
Sundance Channel will launch the latest season of its late-night destination ASIA EXTREME August and September, showcasing the latest and strangest in cutting-edge Asian genre fare. The season presents a total of thirteen feature films, including ten U.S. television premieres and one Sundance Channel premiere. The new season of ASIA EXTREME launches on September 6 at 12:00am et/pt.
The latest season of Asia Extreme showcases a bakers dozen of offbeat and provocative genre films horror, crime drama, fantasy/horror, action/thrillers, and more -- from Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan. Among the not-to-be-missed debuts are ELECTION (2005) and TRIAD ELECTION (2006), a gangland two-parter from prolific Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To. Chronicling the bloody succession battles within a Hong Kong underworld family, the Election saga earned favorable comparisons to The Godfather. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called To one of the greatest action directors working in the world, and wrote in her review of TRIAD ELECTION: Mr. To has built a dazzling brilliant career out of cinematic mayhem; here he rises to the challenge of that legacy with a metaphor about capitalism, men and meat that is perfect in its simplicity and barbarism. Also premiering is To and Wai Ka Fais 2007 crime/thriller MAD DETECTIVE, an inventive tale about the line between genius and madness.
The remaining seven U.S. television premieres are Dae-wung Lims BLOODY REUNION; Ho Chois BLOODY TIES; Benny Chans DIVERGENCE; Akihiko Shiotas DORORO; Songyos Sugmakanans DORM; Nicky Lois THE VICTIM; and Feng Xiaogangs A WORLD WITHOUT THIEVES. A Sundance Channel premiere, Norio Tsurutas PREMONITION, Kiyoshi Kurosawas BRIGHT FUTURE, and Ha Yoos A DIRTY CARNIVAL round out the line-up.
In addition to their on-air presentations, the thirteen Asia Extreme feature films will be available free from August 1-August 31 via an exclusive cable video-on-demand package (in HD where available). Also premiering on-demand and online on August 1 is THE CAPTIVE, a 12-episode original web series created by Stuart Hynson Culpepper and Karin Diann Williams of Culpepper/Williams. A science fiction/action thriller set in an unspecified future, THE CAPTIVE follows an unsuspecting twenty-something who is spirited away to the depths of a secret prison, where he is faces a brutal interrogation and attempts to escape with the help of a seductive but enigmatic Trustee. The cast includes Michael Gladis, best known as the pipe-smoking ad man Paul Kinsey on MAD MEN. THE CAPTIVE won the 2008 New York Television Festival (NYTF) Award for Best Web Series Pilot.
